Spring has officially sprung, and with it comes thoughts of spring cleaning, fresh starts and new awakenings – and many see it as an ideal time to give their home a makeover. The question is, just how much are you planning to spend on this interior revival? According to research from American Express, the sum could quickly ramp up…

The research found that the typical homeowner expects to spend £3,404 on sprucing up their homes this year, including £678 on structural renovations, £433 on home repairs and £314 on soft furnishings. That's before we even get to things like painting and decorating (£283), furniture for the living room and bedroom (£470 in total), kitchen accessories (£193), electronic equipment (£206), gardening supplies (£190) and white goods (£171).

This kind of home improvement shopping list may appear eye-watering, but it's something many homeowners want to embark on. For example, 33% say that their homes could do with freshening up and a further 15% claim that their house-proud nature is motivating them to make a change, which means that a bit of DIY will surely follow.

However, this doesn't mean that people are averse to a few cost-cutting measures. For example, 35% are planning to do the work themselves to save money on their makeovers, while 12% would consider asking family or friends to lend a hand. A further 27% would seek out sales and 21% would head to discount websites in order to make some cost savings, showing the importance of savvy shopping.

Catherine Prentke, director at American Express, commented on the findings: "Homeowners are looking to invest in revamping and revitalising their homes in 2016, but the cost of home improvements can soon add up. That's why we're encouraging people to consider putting their spend on a card that allows them to earn cashback or rewards on their shopping."

We happen to agree! There's nothing better than getting something for nothing, and if you're spending a pretty penny on a makeover or two, why not get some of those pennies back? Opting for a cashback credit card could be ideal, and as long as you make sure to pay off the balance in full each month, you could well benefit.
